This is not a themed room. This is not a novelty. This is an actual 1900s trolley car that once carried passengers along the shores of Mission Bay — now converted into a fully livable, charming two-bedroom, one-bathroom coastal retreat that sleeps up to four guests.
The original sliding doors still operate. The wooden interior still carries the warmth of a century of history. And the rooftop deck above it all delivers 360-degree views of Mission Bay. Please note: this house does not have AC.
The History
San Diego's electric streetcar system was one of the great civic achievements of the early 20th century, connecting downtown to the beaches and shaping the neighborhoods that define the city today. When the system was retired in 1949, most of the old cars were hauled to Mission Beach and burned. A lucky few were saved and converted into homes. The Cable Car at 3916 Mission Blvd is one of those survivors — a living piece of San Diego history that has been thoughtfully preserved and updated for the modern guest, without losing an ounce of its original character.
The Layout
The ground floor welcomes you with the trolley car's original footprint — a cozy living area, a fully equipped kitchen with gas appliances, and the rear double bedroom with built-in storage, original lighting, and windows that frame the Mission Blvd streetscape. Ascend the stairs to find the upstairs queen bedroom — comfortable, private, and full of that same warm wooden character that runs throughout the home.
Continue up one more flight and you arrive at the crown of the property — a private rooftop deck with 360-degree views of Mission Bay, complete with a dining area and propane BBQ grill. This is where evenings happen. This is where the memories get made.
