Mission Valley
Mission Valley is a neighborhood and valley of San Diego that is rich with culture and history. Spanning from Interstate 5 to Interstate 15, Mission Valley is one of the largest neighborhood areas in San Diego city, and contains hundreds of bars, restaurants and other businesses, as well as two large shopping malls. Home to the Kumeyaay Native Americans for over 10,000 years, Mission Valley as we know it has only been around since the late 1940’s.
During the post- WWII developments across America, the city began encroaching on the valley, and the community and business district of Mission Valley were created. The 163 divides the neighborhoods of Mission Valley East and Mission Valley West. The malls, stadium, and other man attractions are found on the East side, while many small local bars, restaurants, as well as lakes and natural attractions are found on the West side.
For those of you looking to try out an area of San Diego before committing to a new home, or those looking for a place to spend a vacation, Mission Valley is a great place to start. Beaches, attractions, and downtown San Diego are all very accessible, while the valley itself still carries its own personality and charm. This is one of the few residential areas close to the San Diego Trolley line, which gives you easy transportation to attractions throughout the county.
Shopping: The two largest malls in San Diego, Fashion Valley and Mission Valley, are both located in Mission Valley. Whether you hope to spend a day shopping in beautiful weather at an outdoor mall, or you simply need a place to find something to eat, these two malls offer hundreds of stores, restaurants and bars.
Qualcomm Stadium: Before Petco Park, this stadium was home to the San Diego Padres. Now that the Chargers are a force in the NFL, Qualcomm Stadium, (the Q to the locals) is home to the locally-revered football team. You can watch San Diego’s NFL team take on worthy opponents, or check out one of the many music events that take place at Qualcomm Stadium.
Fiesta Island: A haven for runners and cyclists, and the birthplace of the triathlon, Fiesta Island is a flat and easy 4-mile loop of land surrounded by Fiesta Bay and Enchanted Cove. If you plan to get some training or exercise in during your vacation, there is also an inner 2-mile loop on the island for those looking for a short and relaxing path.
Mission Bay and Park: About two miles from the westernmost edge if Mission Valley is Mission Bay Park. You can follow Sea World Drive to the beachfront locations of Mission Bay, or take the 5 north to the many Mission Bay parks and picnic areas. This is a popular spot for family gatherings, birthday parties, picnics, barbeques, and reunions. They have grills and some open fire pits provided, as well as easy access to swimming in the Bay. You can bring the family for a day in the sun, or just explore the paths used by bikers, skaters, and runners.
Distances to Main Attractions
Beaches: Via the 8 Freeway, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, and Pacific Beach are only about 10 minutes west of the center of Mission Valley. There is also easy access to the beaches of La Jolla and Del Mar.
SeaWorld San Diego: Depending on your location in Mission Valley, SeaWorld is anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes away.
San Diego International Airport: Easily accessible from the Mission Valley area, the San Diego Airport is a 15-minute drive.
Historic Gas Lamp District and Downtown San Diego: The center of downtown is an easy 10 to 15-minute drive through Hillcrest or North Park.
Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo: You can generally reach Balboa Park from anywhere in Mission Valley in less than 15 minutes. The 8 to the 163 is the most direct route.
Old Town San Diego: Less than five minutes away, the Historic area of Old Town San Diego is easily accessible and loaded with culture. If you’re staying in a vacation rental near the Fashion Valley trolley stop, you can hop on a 5 minute trolley ride to experience Old Town.
Easy Access to Interstate 8, 5, and 15, as well as the 163.
