College Area
As one of San Diego’s most bustling neighborhoods, College Area has several attractions for locals and visitors alike. This Mid-City neighborhood rightfully gets its name for being home to San Diego State University, one of the most popular colleges in the county, and has a number of restaurants, bars, shops, and sights.
Did you know San Diego State University wasn’t always named as such? Before its current moniker (which to some is simply state or SDSU), the university was called San Diego Normal School, San Diego State College, and San Diego State Teacher’s College. Regardless, it’s easy to remember the neighborhood’s main attraction. San Diego State University was established in 1897, and is dubbed a Research University with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation.
The university is not only known for its research and academic accomplishments. The university also established San Diego State University Press, the oldest university press among the CSU system. State is also home to KPBS Public Broadcasting, KCR (AM), and various publications like The Daily Aztec. The university is home to the Don Powell Theater, which hosts several entertainment events each year including plays, dance performances, and music. Let’s not forget about the Open Air Theater and Viejas Arena, which frequently host world-renowned musicians. The Aztecs also excel in various sporting activities such as basketball, football, crew, and more.
Outside of the university itself are several places worth visiting. The area is filled with young people and students, but also has restaurants and shops suitable for all ages. Woodstock’s Pizza serves delicious pies, pitchers of beer and hosts fun events like Trivia Tuesdays. For a unique cup of coffee and a warm, home-like environment, visit Living Room Cafe, which also features a lovely patio and scrumptious eats.
Get outside and enjoy our wonderful weather in College Area’s Clay Park at the intersection of Seminole and Art Street. This park features a basketball court, playground, nice grassy area for relaxing or playing soccer, a baseball diamond, and is dog friendly (on a leash, that is).
The San Diego Police Museum features several interesting exhibits with artifacts, photos, and other interesting tidbits about the history of San Diego’s law enforcement. The museum is located at 4710 College Avenue, and features a display from as early as 1889!
So, whether you’re interested in performing arts, live music, great food, having an outdoor adventure, or learning some local history, College Area can provide the fun!
