San Diego Vacation Rentals: Whale Watching in your Backyard

From late December to early April, San Diego celebrates the migration of thousands of California Gray Whales. Viewing these gentle giants is an awe-inspiring spectacle. Grey whales on average reach a length of about 16 meters (52 ft), a weight of 36 tons and an age of 50–60 years, with males commonly smaller than females.

Each year thousands of grey whales make the 6,000 mile migration, the longest migration of any mammal. They can be seen down the west coast of North America, from their Alaskan waters to the warm Mexico waters. Traveling both night and day, Gray whales average approximately 120 km (80 miles) per day, with an average speed of four to five knots per hour.

Port of San Diego tenants Hornblower Cruises and Events and San Diego Harbor Excursion reported a significant boost in ticket sales and curiosity calls, in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the 30-foot juvenile whale.

Now is a great time to reserve a beach side San Diego vacation rental and plan to see the whales for an unforgettable time. We offer rentals off the beach and near whale watching hot spots where you can get a boat ride out to see them, like mission beach, Tori Pines and the Harbor.
